Faerûn is watched over by many gods, who often come into conflict with one another. People often pay homage to many different deities in the course of daily life, but they often pick one or two as personal patrons or exemplars to follow.

The entire cosmology of Toril was transformed during the Spellplague, with deities rising, falling, and being torn asunder. Many gods thought dead since the Time of Troubles have since reclaimed their place in the celestial order.
